The Eighth ACRS was held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 23 to 29 November 1987. H.E. Dr. B.J. Habibie, Minister for Science and Technolgy, Indonesia (Subsequently the President of Indonesia) opened the Conference.
The local organizer for the ACRS was the Indonesian Surveyor's Association. Dr. Soekotjo, President of the Indonesia Surveyor's Association was the Chairman of the local organizing committee. LAPAN, the Indonesian Space agency and BAKOSURTANOL also co-sponsored the Conference.
The Organization of the Conference
The ACRS was attended by 226 participants: 77 from countries of the Asian region, 23 from outside the Asian region and 126 from Indonesia. The table below shows the country wise distribution of participants.

A total of 125 papers were presented at the 8th ACRS. This included 10 national papers reporting on national activities. There were 7 papers on regional co-operation and 9 on technical information. There were 8 technical sessions. Papers presented in them were as follows: Agriculture and Forests-13 papers, Geology-12 papers, Water Resources-13 papers, Data Processing-14 papers, Land Use-10 papers, Special Aerial Remote Sensing-6 papers, Oceanography- 6 papers, and others- 6 papers. In addition there were two poster sessions in which 19 posters were presented.
Two sessions of the general conference were held during the ACRS on 23 and 26 October. As usual there were commercial exhibition, technical visits and cultural events during the conference.
