The Sixteenth Asian Conference on Remote Sensing
Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.20-24 November, 1995
Asian Association on Remote Sensing (AARS), National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) and Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) jointly organized the 16th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS) during November 20-24, 1995 at SUT in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. It was a great honour for Thailand to host the third ACRS. The 1st ACRS was held at NRCT, Bangkok, Thailand in November 1980 and the second one, the 9th ACRS, was held at the Ambassador Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand during November 1988.
The 16th ACRS was one of the remarkably successful Conference, especially in the opening ceremony, it was a great honour that Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously inaugurated the Conference. Mr. Boonchu Tree-Thong, Minister of the Ministry of University Affair and Prof. Dr. Shunji Murai, General Secretary of The Asian Association on Remote Sensing (AARS) reported on the matters of this ACRS and the activities of AARS to HRH Princess respectively.
EXCERPTS FROM THE ADDRESS OF
H.R.H. PRINCESS MAHA CHAKRI SIRINDHORN |
"Remote Sensing technology has been remarkably and rapidly developed during the last twenty years from optical to newly emerged radar technology. I have been personally keeping pace with it in an attempt to find ways and means to apply it to agriculture and land use planning which are important elements for rural development. Therefore I am pleased to be among the scholars and world renowned experts in this fast developing field. |
|
I should like to stress here, however, that the most important thing is the wise utilization of the technology. With the impending world crisis as resources are depleted at an alarming rate, particularly the non-renewable ones, and the deterioration of environment, I would like to urge everybody to take interest in the sustainable development of our natural resources and to do our utmost in preventing the over exploitation. |
|
Remotely sensed data, in this regard, should provide valuable source of information that needs to be disseminated and incorporated in planning and decision making process of implementing land utilization scheme in the national and regional development process. |
|
Distinguished guests and participants, I am happy that this is the third time Thailand is hosting the Conference, and that the number of concurrent meetings that will be held during this experiences is not only very appropriate but also very necessary for the over all benefit of the region."

The programme of the conference included Key-note speeches, Technical presentations, Poster sessions and Commercial exhibitions. The contents of technical presentations were concerned with the applications of Remote Sensing and GIS to Forest Resources, Water Resources, Marine Resources, Land Resources, Agriculture, Data Processing, Digital Image Processing and Global Environment.
The Organizing Committee selected two best speakers and three best posters from among those presented as follows:
Best Speakers:
1. Mr. Suphan Kanchanasutham from Thailand, his paper is "Assessment Of ERS-1 SAR Data for Rice Crop Mapping and Monitoring". 2. Mr. Taejung Kim from Korea for his paper on " A Technique for 3D Modeling of Building ".
Best Posters:
1. "Change Detection in Coastal Zone by Remote Sensing Technique" by Mrs. Valairat Wanpiyarat, Miss. Promchit Trakuldist and Mr. Boonrak Pattanakanok from Thailand. 2. "Identification of Agriculture in Songkhla Lake Basin from the GlobeSAR Data" by Miss. Supapit Polgnam from Thailand.
3. "Land Use/ Land Cover Change Detection in the Chiang Mai Area Using LANSAT TM " by Miss Somporn Sangawongse from Thailand.
There were 358 registered participants from 31 countries and two International Organisations: ESCAP and UNEP. This covered 293 persons from 21 countries in Asian Region, the other 41 persons from 10 countries from out side the Asian Region and 24 persons from ESCAP and UNEP.
At this ACRS, three new members were admitted as ordinary members of the Asian Association on Remote Sensing, namely China Taipei, Jordan and Democratic People's Republic of Laos. Since the term of the General Secretary was over this year, all members of AARS decided to select again Prof. Dr. Shunji Murai from AIT as General Secretary and Mr. Manu Omakupt from the School of Remote Sensing, Institute of Science, SUT as Deputy General Secretary for the next term of AARS.
