Extracts from the 7th General Conference
Jakarta, Indonesia, 1987
This General Conference was held in Jakarta, Indonesia during the eighth ACRS on 23 and 26 October 1987. The sessions were presided over by Dr. Soekotjo Thokrasoewarho of the Indonesian Surveyor's Association and was attended by 10 countries: Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Viet Nam and Australia. Observers from UN ESCAP, Malaysia, Pakistan and Singapore also attended the General Conference.
The General Conference extended gratitude to Dr. B.J Habibie, the Minister of Science and Technology (then President of Indonesia) for his August presence and patronization at the opening session of the 8th ACRS at Jakarta.
The ITC, Netherlands applied to join the AARS as an associate member. However, the decision to consider ITC's application was deferred till the next General Conference as questions were raised if ITC would represent Netherlands or it will represent the organization itself. If it represents the country, then the statute does not allow acceptance of countries outside the Asian region in the membership categories. The General Secretary would get a clarification before the next General Conference.
The General Conference also discussed on the regional meeting at ISPRS, Kyoto in 1988. The General Conference was informed that Asian delegates will be invited to the Regional Meeting and it was suggested that the topics discussed sould include the following:
A. Introduction of Activities of ACRS and role of AARS,
B. Common interest, for example:
- Education and Training
- Regional Co-operation
- Data Utilization in operational applications.
