Extracts from the 12th General Conference
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, 1992
The General Conference was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on 8th and 9th October 1992.
Professor Murai, in his Geneal Secretary's report, stressed the need for the AARS to support China as the current host of the Commission VI of ISPRS (Chairman Professor Li Deren, 1992-1996) which deals with economics, professonal matters and education.
Professor Murai also stressed the need to sell more copies of the book "Application of Remote Sensing to Asia and Oceania", published under the aegis of AARS. He also informed the meeting that the draft of an English version of "Remote Sensing Notes" would be completed by the end of 1992. He hoped that these notes would be translated into other languages by member countries.
The General Conference also discussed on the ongoing plan to establish a 1 km national data grid for the region and on other current global mapping and research programmes.
The General Conference discussed on the benefits of spatially compiling data on agricultural statistics in the Asian countries. However, there was a note of warning that some countries could be sensitive to the provision of 1 km level data, particularly the digital terrain data.
The General Conference was informed that the Geographical Survey Institute of Japan was attempting to develop global maps at a scale of 1:million and AARS was requested to support the effort. All AARS members were also requested to report on CEOS activities with regard to global data networks. It was further suggested that a special session on "Global Networks for Scientific Research" should be held at the 14th ACRS.
