Extracts from the 14th General Conference
Bangalore, India, 1994
Two sessions of the General Conference were held on 18 and 21 November 1994 under the Chairmanship of Professor U.R.Rao. Countries participating in the General Conference were: Australia, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Canada, Jordan, Kuwait, Myanmar, and Netherlands.
Professor Shunji Murai presented the annual report and the financial report of AARS. A report on the Working Group on 1 Km Land Cover Data Base of Asia was presented by Dr. R. Tateishi, Chairman of that Working Group.
The General conference agreed to establish two new Working Groups: Working Group on GIS Text Book with Dr. R. Shibasaki of the University of Tokyo as the Chairman and the Working Group on GIS Software for Educational Purpose with Dr. Kohei Cho of Tokai University as Chairman. A number of participants at the General Conference expressed their willingness to serve the working groups.
The Working Group on the GIS Text Book would prepare and publish a book on GIS, particularly drawing on remotely sensed data and derived information. The book would have similar form to the already published book "Remote Sensing Notes".
The Working Group on Software would develop a low cost educational software package, together with a data set relating to successful applications in the region.
The software should be developed for lowest order PC, and should incorporate remote sensing and data processing.
A further Working Group was proposed by Professor Bruce Forster of Australia to develop a listing of scientists involved in fundamental and strategic research within the region. The purpose of this listing was to make scientists aware of others working in the similar research areas, to develop a network for exchange of information and co-operation and to promote the high level research being undertaken in the region, at the international level. Following the discussions the Working Group was also approved. Professor Forster agreed to make contact with member countries to prepare this list.
